Recruiting New Members

The lifeblood of any Alliance is members, especially new members, as a certain percentage of existing members wind up becoming inactive and cease to play the game over time, and will then need to be replaced. This page attempts to distill the techniques Captain Thomasi has used to build the G65 Tribe of Alliances from nothing to over 125 pirates (and counting) across four different Alliances (and counting).

Note: this page presumes a basic level of familiarity with in game terminology. Feel free to contact another member in game if you have questions about the meaning of any of the terms used. L = Level, L17 stands fora member who has constructed a Level 17 Fortress. R = Rank (within an Alliance), there are 4 Ranks, starting with R1, and rising to R4 (usually reserved for very active members who are officer material and/or very high power). R1 and R2 are usually used for non-officer members.

Identifying Good Recruiting Targets

Recruiting is a time intensive task. You don't want to waste your time on attempting to recruit Captains that are inactive or unlikely to be interested. The first step in a successful recruiting effort is applying some basic filters to potential candidates, such as whether they are active, and if they are a member of an existing Alliance, whether it is likely to be meeting their needs: in practice, this comes down to whether or not the Alliance has an active member base and an engaged and active Leader.

As stated, your target may be either not a member of an existing Alliance (an “indie” or “solo player”), in which case, your job is to convince them of the benefits of Alliance membership in general (and of membership in our Alliances in particular), or, more typically, is already a member of an existing Alliance, and your goal is to convince them to switch from their current Alliance to one of ours that is appropriate for their Fortress and Power level.

The G65 Tribe of Alliances includes Alliances for every level of player, so, potentially, any player that has reached the basic activity threshold of constructing a L7 Fortress may be recruited. In actual practice, we typically don't recruit players that have not yet constructed a L10 Fortress and accumulated at least 1,000,000 in power (the minimum new member requirements threshold for our newest Alliance, G98).

Avoiding Inactive Players

One of the primary concerns you face when recruiting is not wasting your time trying to recruit people who have quit the game permanently, “inactives” in game parlance. The game, unfortunately, does not allow you to determine whether a player not in your Alliance is active, directly. Indirectly, the best indicator (other than seeing actual activity, such as ships coming and going) is whether your target is shielded. Especially during the PvP Event. If they are unshielded during that period, it is highly unlikely that they are active. While being unshielded at other times is less of a negative indicator, absent an automatically generated shield resulting from a server reboot or other game maintenance activities, a shielded base is always an indicator that the member is active. When recruiting out of an Alliance, an near total absence of shielded Alliance members, along with the absence of critical infrastructure such as an Alliance Fortress, is a good indication that the target in question is inactive.

Recruiting Solo Players

Functionally speaking, any active “solo” player with an L13 Fortress or above is a good candidate for recruiting. You can find them several ways: by simply scanning the map for Captains who do not have an Alliance tag, by scanning the Leaderboards for ranked Captains that do not have an Alliance tag, and by clicking on “Invite Members” under “Manage Alliance” on the “Alliance” screen and making note of the member names of any listed members that meet the basic criteria for membership in the Alliance you are recruiting for. In actual practice, the “Invite Members” page, as designed, is functionally worthless (especially after recent updates), and the only really effective technique is scanning the ocean map. I usually restrict these efforts to an area somewhat immediately surrounding an existing Alliance, as there's a fair chance that the target player in question has seen that the Alliance they are near is active and are at least moderately curious about what's going on with it.

Recruiting Members of Existing Alliances

Members of successful, growing, well managed Alliances are unlikely to be receptive to a recruiting pitch. Stating the obvious corollary: you should focus your efforts on targeting players who are likely to be unhappy with their current Alliance. This begs the question, “How do I determine that?”

Some base level criteria I use are: is the general level of members in an Alliance a mismatch to the player in question? If an Alliance contains just one or two members that are ranked higher, especially much higher, than all of the other members, especially when these members are NOT officers (are R1 and R2), they are good targets for recruiting (i.e. members who've constructed L16 or L17 Fortresses in an Alliance where no other member has advanced beyond L12 and are still an R1 or R2 in an Alliance that actually ranks members). Another further positive indicator is if the Alliance Leader is not at least an L15 or better (this suggests they are not as active as an Alliance Leader needs to be). Another positive indicator of limited or non-management is if the Alliance Member page shows that Rank names have not been customized, and/or all members are R1 and no ranking / promotion is occurring.

Another thing I look for is growth capped Alliances: if an Alliance has filled nearly every slot, and many of them are filled by low level members (especially members L10 and below), it is unlikely to gain significant amounts of power, lack of which hampers both the Alliances ability to defend itself, and its ability to engage in offensive action against other Alliances. Ambitious, high ranking members of such Alliances may be susceptible to being convinced that their Alliance is going no where fast, and that they need to switch to one of ours in order to have a chance to participate in a growing, active Alliance.

Weak Alliances “hide” along the edge of board, which presents problems for active, high ranking members, as hunting / resource island levels in their immediate are are inadequate, and force them to spend lots of time waiting as their ships travel long distances to suitable areas. High ranking members in such Alliances are thus a prime recruiting opportunity.

Hit your target with a pitch tuned to their Alliance's weakness: disparity between the target and other members' level, caps to growth, bad location, etc.

Closing the Deal

Recruits may need to be hand-held though the whole process and followed up with a couple of times after initially expressing an interest. It has occasionally taken me a week or two of periodic messaging back and forth and checking in to recruit a target.

Once they've joined, make sure to greet and engage with the new member in Alliance Chat, this encourages other members to do the same and often offers a strong contrast with the new members previous experience in an inactive Alliance. If you are an Alliance Officer or Leader, always immediately promote new members to R2, this is cosmetic, but people still appreciate it. High powered members should be promoted to R3, and very high power members queried as to whether they are interested in R4/Officer ranking.

Spend at least 30 minutes every day finding and messaging folks and you'll be very successful very quickly.

Templates

Here are some censor tested templates for recruiting members. Feel free to put your own spin on the verbiage used. If you do, and run into censor filter issues as a result, please consult the Censor Dictionary page for likely culprit words.

Generic Chat Template

Send this via the “Private Chat” button.

XXX is growing fast, lots of active members and officers, very selective. You'd make a great addition. Join us?

For a growth capped Alliance:

It looks like your Alliance is stuck in the slow lane, any interest in joining an Alliance full of active and engaged officers and members?

Messaging Subject Line Templates

Join G65? G67, 73, 75, etc.

Join An Elite Alliance? usually reserved for a top 25 Alliance (currently G65/7), and aimed at a high level recruit

Switch Alliances?

Switch Alliances to G65?

Message Body Templates

The following templates have been edited to ensure they pass the censor filter built into the in game Messaging function. Copy and paste the content into the message body area. Make sure you've created Location Bookmarks for all four Alliances, so that you can attach the appropriate Bookmark for the Alliance to which you're attempting to recruit the target.

Templates for Recruiting Solo Players

As of this writing, G65 recruiting is focused on L17+, G67 L15-16/high power, G73 L13-15/lower power, and G98 for anyone that doesn't meet G73's L13/2,000,000 level and power requirements. G75 targets recruits using internal guidelines. Bracketed sections are optional, use as appropriate. Replace the bracketed numbers with current rankings and power totals. All brackets must be replaced or deleted, otherwise your message will not be accepted.

Obviously, if you're not recruiting for G65, the section referencing membership requirements in it does not need to be included (for example). We pitch solo players differently from Alliance members, because, obviously, members who are not in an Alliance need to be sold on the benefits of joining one. Note: The first line of these templates may also be used when recruiting members of broken/dead Alliances that offer their players no protection whatsoever.

Solo/G98

Aimed at lower powered “solo” players, who are not members of an existing Alliance. G98 is relatively low ranked compared to our other Alliances (though that is changing fast), and so requires a slightly different pitch.

Instead of being a “Secret Mission” target, why not join an active and engaged Alliance where you are at much less risk of being opportunistically attacked without consequence?

G98 is a Top [75] Alliance that is selectively seeking new members, and is part of a larger family of closely knit Alliances with over [900] million total power, incl-uding G65, a Top 15 Alliance. More power, higher ranking = more ability to protect members, group raid effectively, etc.

Our area has excellent hunting, resource islands, etc. and our Alliance has lots of active members and officers. You're an ideal candidate to join us, we are looking for active folks that want to level fast. We offer a very different, much more rewarding experience than playing this game solo, which the designers clearly discourage.

Alliance membership offers tremendous benefits: a wide variety of speed ups, free gold/silver/items, Alliance specific Quests and Rewards, defensive/offensive/production buffs, etc., all of which accelerate growth/leveling and make playing the game more fun.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. If interested, move to the attached coordinates and send a join request:

Go to attached coordinates, pick an open ocean space, select “Move Territory”. You must have a “Premium Move Ticket” to do this, you probably do, as very few people move frequently and they can be acquired in many ways.

Please be aware that while you are encouraged to relocate inside our territory (pink line) so as to benefit from Alliance Skills based defense capabilities, you will be unable to re-/raise a Shield until your membership application has been accepted by an ad-min.

To request membership in our Alliance, click on any Alliance member base, select “Details”, select “Alliance Info”, find the “Join Alliance” but-ton. Your application will be approved ASAP. Feel free to message me if you have issues, and to let me know you've applied.

Solo G65/67/73/75

Aimed at higher powered “solo” players, who are not members of an existing Alliance.

Instead of being a Secret Mission target, why not join an active and engaged Alliance where you are at much less risk of being opportunistically attacked without consequence?

G[XX] is a high level, Top [XX] Alliance with over [100],000,000 power that is selectively seeking new members, and is part of a larger family of closely knit Alliances with over [900] million total power [incl-uding G65, a Top 15 Alliance]. More power, higher ranking = more ability to protect members, group raid effectively, etc.

[If you don't quite meet G65's high membership requirements for level and power, G67, a Top [25] Alliance with over [XXX],000,000 power, and G75, a Top [30] Alliance with over [XXX],000,000 power also have slots available and less strict criteria for membership.]

Our area has excellent hunting, resource islands, etc. and our Alliance has lots of active, high ranking members that regularly partici-pate in large scale group activities ([30/40] ship raids are not uncommon) and actively defend each other. Strong community, active and engaged officers across all Alliances. You're an ideal candidate to join us based on your level and obvious ongoing efforts to be active.

Obviously, if you're not recruiting for G65, the section referencing membership requirements in it does not need to be included (for example). If the member's Alliance is functioning and at least moderately high level (say, 60,000,000 plus), they probably aren't being continually targeted for Secret Missions, etc. Obviously, if the Alliance in question has plenty of room for new members, and is thus not growth capped, the section pointing this out as an issue should not be included.

Alliance Member to G98

Aimed at lower powered Alliance members.

Join an active, growing Alliance today! Very different, much more rewarding experience [than the smaller, lower power Alliance you are currently a member of].

[Your current Alliance is nearly out of space for new members, with less than XX,000,000 power and is thus unlikely to get any stronger. GXX has XX,000,000 power and is actively managed to ensure that number rises. As previously stated, more power, higher ranking = more ability to protect members, group raid effectively, etc.]

Alliance Leader Pitch Template

Aimed at folks just starting their own Alliance, with none, or only a few members recruited to date. These are usually not high powered individuals, thus the default is to direct them to G75 and go from there. Replace the bracketed numbers with current rankings and power totals.
